Rockin' A Ranch

Rockin' A Ranch is a facility that is entirely family owned and provides unique experiences for just about any occasion or activity you can think of. The concept of the ranch sprang up from their interests in preserving our western heritage, the romantic image of the hard working cowboy, our western folklore, western art, literature, poetry riding, driving and most recently our interest in the theroputic benefits of Equine Theropy.

The ranch is situated on 80 beautifully rolling acres spotted with 100-year-old oaks and plenty of open space so you can "kick up your heels" without worrying about "botherin' the neighbors". Most of the ranch is situated on gently rolling hills that are easily hiked or ridden.

It is located just 7 miles from El Dorado Hills, California, 10 miles from Highway 50, and 11 miles from the old historic town Folsom. You can even visit Folsom Prisons gift shop, which Johnny Cash made famous with his Folsom Prison Blues. So it is far enough out to feel like you are in the middle of nowhere but within an easy commute to towns and major thoroughfares.

The ranch is located in the heart of the Mother Lode where gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, which ignited the fuse that created the explosion of western migration from around the world in 1849. Boomtowns sprung up overnight and the two most significant discovery sites happened within minutes of the ranch. The American River where gold was discovered is just a walk, or ride from the ranch. You can even try your hand at gold panning down at the river.

You can easily visit several gold rush towns and historical sites within a short amble from the ranch like Cool, Auburn, The Bailey House, Coloma Gold Discovery State Historic Park, Hangtown (Placerville), Clarksville, and Pokertown (Plymouth). On longer excursions you can venture into Sonora, Angels Camp, Grass Valley, Sutter's Creek, Amador City, which are all, loaded with antique stores and fine dining, or take a short trip up to South Lake Tahoe.

Old Town Sacramento which is a State Historic Park is loaded with restaurants, stores, and history within it's 1800's restored buildings and Sutter's Fort, where John Sutter lived and worked, is just a short commute from there as well. You are truly surrounded by some of the most significant historical sites of the mid to late 1800's.

If river rafting is your fancy one of the most infamous rafting rivers in the country is just a walk down the hill. You can easily drive to the quaint town of Coloma and "hitch a ride in a raft" through the canyon over category 5 rapids like Satin's Cesspool and end up at the pick up point at Folsom Lake.

From just about any spot on the ranch you will experience breathtaking vistas of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada Mountains, Folsom Lake in the distance, three ponds, and miles of access to riding and hiking trails.

The ranch backs to BLM (Bureau Of Land Management) land preserves and the American River Heritage Foundations public lands which provide riding and hiking trails down to the rapids on the American River and riding and hiking to the historic gold discovery site in Coloma or down to Folsom Lake. In all there are over 100 miles of riding trails from the trailhead at the ranch.

Into Cowboy Action Shooting or Mounted Cowboy Action Shooting we've got the venue for you too. How about setting up your event along a main street lined with false front vintage buildings from a hotel, saloon, blacksmiths shop, barbershop, and general store. Walk along the plank boardwalk or amble down the dirt main street as you are presented with targets in the windows, behind the buildings or hidden in the brush behind the town. Mounted shooting events can be held within the equestrian arena near the ghost town. Either way the ambiance will invoke images of the old west within your mind and transform your event into a lifelike shoot out in the old west.

Filming and photo shoot locations abound on and around the ranch. Many films have already been shot in the area such as Breakdown, The Horse Whisperer, City of Angels, Anna and the King, Almost Famous, Smoke Jumpers, Inferno, White Mile, A Place In The Sun, Baywatch The River of No Return, Isolated, Straight From The Heart, Memoirs of a Geisha, Out of the Woods, A Place Called Home and many more. You can check them out at

Rockin' A Ranch has the amenities for large film production crews, access to the American River, exquisite location shoots, room to build sets and a remoteness from public scrutiny and yet easy commutes to many hotel, restaurant, and theatric suppliers that may be needed.
